Online Pet Insurance Comparison

There is no NHS for pets, and many of their injuries and ailments can be very expensive. Every pet owner has heard stories of vet bills coming at exactly the wrong time – they can make a real dent in your finances. It’s not unheard of for families with pets to find their credit cards maxed out briefly and paying down that debt is expensive.

Pet insurance is a great way for pet lovers and their families to protect against those moments of crisis.

Who Can Have Pet Insurance?

Pet insurance is commonly available for:

  • Dogs
  • Cats
  • Rabbits

Smaller mammals like gerbils and hamsters can also have insurance, though their shorter lifespans mean this is less common.

Some insurers also cover exotic pets, including:

  • Lizards
  • Snakes
  • Parrots

However, not all insurance providers are willing to do so, and the cost of insurance can be higher as a result.

Venomous animals are not insurable. However, if they come into contact with members of the public, liability insurance may be useful.

Types of Pet Insurance Cover

Pet insurance can be loosely divided into four types:

  • Accident Only
  • Time Limited
  • Per Condition
  • Lifetime

These vary in what they cover and in their cost.

Accident Only pet cover is usually the cheapest type of pet insurance. However, it only covers you if your pet is injured in an accident.

Time Limited pet insurance works like term life insurance for humans. You’re covered against accident or short-term illness, but only during a specific period set by the insurance – usually 12 months.

Per Condition pet insurance is also called ‘maximum benefit’ cover. These policies allocate a separate fixed sum of money for each illness or injury. Cover like this means that if your pet’s ailment turns out to have an underlying condition, you are covered for both – hence ‘maximum benefit’.

Lifetime cover is usually the most expensive type of cover. However, it protects your pet throughout the course of its life.

Typical Features of Pet Insurance

Some features are almost standard across pet insurance policies. For the areas your policy covers, your policy will usually handle:

  • Liability cover
  • Vet fees and other medical treatments
  • Kennel and cattery fees

However, pet insurance can’t be claimed against for routine check-ups or pre-existing conditions. You usually won’t be able to claim preventative treatments, either.
